career exploration & workforce development ... FOR GIRLS!
After finishing high school Kassy wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do but she knew that it had to be something creative. Growing up she always had her toes dipped in the art world and loved to explore different genres from airbrushing, clay and skate decks to surfboards, murals, acrylics and house paints. Basically, anything that had to do with paint, she wanted in!
After school she wanted to travel so she saved money she earned from painting houses and murals alongside having two other jobs, one in a skate shop and the other in a music store. After her traveling ventures Kassy decided to study Interior Design. She stayed in that field for about six years before deciding it was time to move on. She migrated over to childcare gaining her certification to work with children. This gave her the opportunity to do after-school art classes and during her free time work at the Disabled Centre in Noosa.
Although this was an extremely rewarding time for her, Kassy says that it wasn’t exactly what she was looking for. She made several attempts to make art her full-time work but kept feeling defeated until one day, by pure luck, she changed th course of her life. She noticed a huge painting on the back of a shed and decided to go and knock on the owner’s door. A wonderful man answered, and they got to talking about a project he was doing, and he just eso happened to be looking to hire someone who was “artsy” and that could paint. From that day forward she became the painter at Aussie World/Banana Bender Pub and says that she absolutely loves her job as each day is always different. She took it upon herself to obtain the qualifications needed to hold a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating.
This led to Kassy creating Trade Chicks as she wants to empower women within the trades through illustrations. She is so passionate about this because she knows first-hand what it is like to be the only woman on site. It isn’t easy and Kassy said she wanted to create a community for females to have space to come together, support each other and unite in the belief that women can do anything they want!
Kassy said that if she could go back and give her 18-year-old self some advice it would be to value yourself and your work. Don’t do work for free just because you feel that is the only way that you can make a breakthrough. Keep going because amazing things are in store for you!
